What WAS Nick Cave doing?

So what was our beloved prince of darkness doing in THERE of all places?

Here it is from the horse's mouth:

"I am not a monarchist, nor am I a royalist, nor am I an ardent republican for that matter; what I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of our age. Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest."

Strangely, I loosely agree with this statement  and definitely would've turned out for the occasion*.

* Fuelled by morbid curiosity alone.

So why are we talking about the coronation here Rob?

Because this is a place for misfits of all colours, genders, persuasions, abilities and intersections.

Far from speaking on behalf of LGBTQ+ people (there is no consensus), by far the most interesting thing was my very own reaction.

That familiar tendency to dissociate from the mainstream in a mire of confusion. I talk about it a bit here.

Sure, the royals have been a constant in our lives, but there's a whole HERD of elephants in this room. Are they welcome?

Oh. Back up! Apparently not.

The antidote?

Community.

London's queer warehouse party, 'Adonis' is perhaps the closest we'll get to a truly socially democratic space in large numbers. It upends privilege, with a door policy that checks everyone. Even me:

"Gay men should always be conscious that they make up the largest proportion of our demographic and respect the presence of women, trans and gender non-conforming people."

Perhaps the closest thing to a living, breathing, utopia, if only for a night.

The learning? When examining an institution, event or public service, we must always ask ourselves:

"Is this a safe space for trans people of colour?"

If the answer is no: adapt, or bin it with immediate effect.

There's really nothing complicated about equality.
